Sprawling on the banks of the river Yamuna, Delhi, the capital of India, typifies the soul of the country. In time the city conceals within its bosom annals of civilizations that flourished for more than three thousand years. Indraprastha, according to legends, the city founded by the Pandavas in the times of the epic Mahabharata (circa 1500 B.C.), was located near the Old Fort that stands on a large mound overlooking the river. Old Fort	The Old Fort is one of the most visited tourist places of Delhi. Purana Qila is a citadel which was partly raised by Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri, who was temporarily deposed Humayun. Sher Shah made a major contribution to public works, built the Qila Kunha Mosque and the Sher Mandal within the citadel in 1541 A.D. The purpose of the later is not quite clear though it is thought that Humayun housed his library there. He fell on it's steep stairs while answering the call to prayer, and died as a result three days later.
Located in Kalkaji in the south of Delhi, it is lotus shaped and has rightly been given the name. It is made of marble, cement, dolomite and sand. It is open to all faiths and is an ideal place for meditation and obtaining peace and tranquility.	Lotus Temple
Qutub Tower	The purpose for building this monument has been variously speculated upon. It could take the usual role of a minaret, calling people for prayer in the Quwwat ul-Islam mosque, the earliest extant mosque built by the Delhi Sultans. Other possibilities are a tower of victory, a monument signifying the might of Islam, or a watch tower for defense. Controversy also surrounds the origins for the name of the tower. Many historians believe that the Qutb Minar was named after the first Turkish sultan, Qutb-ud-din Aibak but others contend that it was named in honour of Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki, a saint from Baghdad who came to live in India and was greatly venerated by Iltutmish.
The beautiful temple built without steel, consists of 234 ornately carved pillars, 9 ornate domes, 20 quadrangled shikhars, a spectacular Gajendra Pith (plinth of stone elephants) and 20,000 murtis and statues of India’s great sadhus, devotees, acharyas and divine personalities. The temple is a fusion of pink stone and pure white marble, where pink stone symbolizes bhakti in eternal bloom and white marble that of absolute purity and eternal peace.	Akshardham Temple
President House	Rashtrapati Bhawan (Hindi for presidential palace) is the official residence of the President of India. A portion of the building houses the President's Secretariat as well. The Durbar Hall is used to conduct such state functions as the swearing-in of the Prime Minister and his Council of Ministers and presentation of civilian and military honors.
Useful Information New Delhi International Airport (Indira Gandhi International Airport, official webpage: www.newdelhiairport.in ) is 45 minutes transfer/taxi of the city centre. Currency exchange The Indian currency is the Rupee. All visitors are advised to exchange currency only at accredited places. It is both risky and illegal to attempt to do so in the street. Individual banks and travel agencies are free to set their own rates (based on those advertised by the Indian National Bank) but they must be clearly displayed. It is advisable to keep records of currency exchange transactions until leaving the country. Major credit cards, debit and charge cards can be used to withdraw money or to pay in the hotels, restaurants and shops for purchases. Dining   Indian cuisine has a reputation for being fiery at all times but this is far from the truth. The great Indian dishes range from being very mild to very hot, but you will find your restaurants very proud of their culinary traditions and will be at pains to make sure you have a memorable meal.
